Chapter 13

COLIN jumped to his feet the moment he heard the alarm sound. His men had finally arrived, and they’d breached the fortress. He opened his door to find the guard manning it had abandoned his post.

Clad in nothing but his kilt, he stalked down the hall, trying to avoid being seen. There was no time to find his horse or his sword. The moment he approached the castle door, he was met with three guards. All three attacked him at once.

Colin swung and ducked when another went to throw a punch. When another reached for his sword, Colin tore it from his hands.

“Let me pass, and I’ll let ye live. Deny me, and I’ll kill ye all.”

All three stared at each other and ran away, leaving him free to exit. But when he swung open the door, he found the upper bailey in total chaos. His men battled it out with the Sinclair’s soldiers, and servants went into hiding, trying to avoid being caught in the battle.

Giric now fought with what could have been one of the commanding officers. Every blow was met with a returning one.

Colin had raced to find the remaining of his men when he encountered Sinclair and McKenzie.

“Well, isn’t this a pleasant reunion? Too bad ye have to die, McIntyre.”

McKenzie lunged for him, and Sinclair ran away like a coward. They fought until Colin clasped McKenzie by the throat.

“This is quite the turn of events. I’m glad to be ridding the world of ye.”

Colin plunged his broadsword into McKenzie’s belly. Colin watched him writhe on the ground until blood seeped out of the corners his mouth.

One down, another to go. He turned to Giric, who had managed to take down the commander. “Where is Sinclair?”

“He ran toward the keep. I imagine his family has run out the back way.”

“I only want him. We’ll figure out what to do with the rest of the clan once we’ve dealt with this matter.”

Colin rushed back into the castle, scouting out every room on the first level. When he cleared that, he entered the hall leading into the dungeons.

When he reached the bottom of the winding river-rock stairs, he found Sinclair attempting to escape through a hidden wall.

“Only a coward runs. What ye did, and yer past transgressions, will be answered for now. Ye will pay for making alliances and taking what isn’t rightfully yers. The McKenzies will answer to me, as yer clan will. Once I’ve killed you, yer wife and daughters will be exiled, and if I ever see their faces in these parts again, I’ll show them the same mercy ye showed Clan Duncan.”

Sinclair dropped his torch and ran at him, tackling Colin to the ground and nearly knocking him out soundly.

Colin reached for a heavy stone off to the side within reach and smashed it to the Sinclair’s head. The man lay limp over him. He tossed the laird aside, got up, and dragged him into a cell, locking it behind him.

That was when he noticed her.
